APC National Convention Kicks Off in Abuja with Buhari, Governors, and Thousands of Delegates Expected

The All Progressives Congress (APC) is set to hold its National Convention today and tomorrow at Eagle Square, Abuja, with President Bola Tinubu, members of his cabinet, 32 state governors, and 8,453 delegates from across Nigeria expected to attend. Top party officials from the national, zonal, state, and ward levels will also be present as new party leaders are elected.

Speaking at a media briefing at the Transcorp Hilton on Thursday, APC Media Sub-Committee Co-Chair and Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, described the convention theme, “Unity in Progress: Consolidating the Renewed Hope Agenda,” as reflective of the party’s identity, achievements, and future direction.

Idris explained that the gathering will provide a platform for policy discussions, leadership elections, and a formal transition to new party executives. “The convention offers delegates from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory an opportunity for decision-making, reflection, and strategic planning for the next phase of the party’s journey,” he said.

He also highlighted that the convention will reinforce the party’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which guides its policy direction and national development initiatives. Idris emphasized that the APC will remain broad-based, embracing diverse viewpoints while upholding unity of purpose.

“All arrangements have been concluded for a smooth, transparent, and credible convention at Eagle Square,” he added, noting that all committees have finalized their operational plans.

Former Katsina State Governor and Chairman of the APC National Convention Central Coordinating Committee, Aminu Masari, confirmed that the party’s zoning arrangements are intact and that the 25 sub-committees are satisfied with preparations. Masari reassured Nigerians that the APC is fully ready for the convention, dismissing claims of pending litigation affecting the event.

Ahead of the convention, some party members have raised concerns about exclusion from the contest. Fubara Dagogo filed a complaint at the Federal High Court in Abuja over his exclusion from the South-South Zonal Congress, while Paul Oyiborume has voiced similar concerns without pursuing legal action. Dagogo, however, confirmed he would not seek an injunction to halt the convention and is pursuing resolution through internal party mechanisms.

Taraba State Governor and Chairman of the APC National Convention Appeals Committee, Agbu Kefas, expressed confidence that the convention would proceed smoothly, noting that the committee is prepared for any unforeseen developments.

In preparation for the event, the Federal Government directed civil servants working within the Federal Secretariat in Abuja to work from home on Friday. Access roads to the Secretariat and surrounding areas will be closed due to the convention, and all relevant agencies have been instructed to ensure compliance.

Eagle Square and nearby roads have been decorated to welcome delegates, while hotels across the Federal Capital Territory report near-full bookings, including top establishments such as Transcorp Hilton, NICON Luxury, and Hotel Continental. Many delegates have also secured accommodations in guesthouses outside the city center due to high demand.

The convention marks a significant milestone for the APC as it consolidates leadership, engages delegates, and sets the stage for preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
