APC Wins AMAC and Bwari Chairmanship Elections in FCT

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Christopher Maikalangu, as the winner of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) chairmanship election held in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Announcing the results, the AMAC Collation Officer, Prof. Andrew Abue, stated that Maikalangu, the incumbent chairman, secured the highest number of votes cast in the election. He polled 40,295 votes out of the 62,861 valid votes recorded.
According to the official results, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) finished second with 12,109 votes, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) garnered 3,398 votes.
Prof. Abue disclosed that 2,336 votes were rejected, bringing the total number of votes cast to 65,197. He added that AMAC has 837,338 registered voters, with 65,676 voters accredited for the election.
“Christopher Maikalangu of the APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and returned elected,” Abue announced.
Reacting to the outcome, the APC Collation Agent, Gambo Babale, described both the voting and collation processes as credible and transparent. He commended INEC for conducting what he termed a smooth and well-organised exercise across polling units, ward collation centres, and the AMAC area council collation centre.
Babale noted that the PDP secured two ward councillorship seats in Karu and Karishi, which he said reflected the transparency of the election. He congratulated Maikalangu and expressed confidence that the victory would translate into more democratic dividends for residents of AMAC. He also described the result as a positive signal for the APC ahead of future elections.
Meanwhile, INEC has also declared Joshua Ishaku of the APC as the winner of the Bwari Area Council chairmanship election.
The Returning Officer for the Bwari election, Prof. Mohammed Nurudeen, announced that Ishaku polled 18,466 votes to emerge victorious in the election held on February 21, 2026.
“I am the Returning Officer for the 2026 FCT Area Council, Bwari chairmanship election. Joshua Ishaku, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and returned elected,” Nurudeen stated.
In Bwari, the ADC candidate secured 4,254 votes to come second, while the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) candidate polled 3,515 votes, finishing third.
