The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Wale Adeniyi, has reaffirmed his commitment to the development of sports in Nigeria following his appointment as one of Team Nigeria’s ambassadors for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Adeniyi was unveiled by the National Sports Commission on April 1, 2026, as part of a broader effort to mobilise national support for the country’s preparations for the Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
His inclusion in the ambassadorial team is seen as recognition of the growing role of public institutions in promoting sports and supporting Nigeria’s quest for international success. It also highlights the Nigeria Customs Service’s contribution to national sports development.
The team of ambassadors includes prominent sports administrators and stakeholders such as Saleh Ahmadu, Amos Adamu, Patrick Ekeji, Alhassan Yakmut and Gbenga Elegbeleye, all of whom have held key positions in the National Sports Commission.
Their experience is expected to provide strategic guidance and strengthen preparations for Team Nigeria’s participation at the Games.
Also appointed to the team are former athletes and sports icons, including Olympic medallist Daniel Igali and Commonwealth champion Blessing Oborodudu, alongside representatives of the private sector and other stakeholders.
The combination of administrators, former athletes and corporate figures is expected to boost confidence in the preparations and ensure broader support for the country’s athletes.
Speaking on his appointment, Adeniyi described sports as a vital instrument for national unity, youth development and global recognition. He stressed the need for collaboration among stakeholders to ensure Team Nigeria is fully prepared for the competition.
According to him, the success of the team will depend not only on the athletes, but also on the strength of the support structure put in place around them.
He said the ambassadorial initiative would help build collective responsibility and encourage stronger backing for Team Nigeria.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games will take place in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2, bringing together athletes from across the Commonwealth to compete in events such as athletics, swimming, boxing, cycling and gymnastics, including para-sports.
