Economic Community of West African States Convenes High-Level Talks in Freetown to Boost Regional Integration

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has held a high-level engagement in Freetown aimed at accelerating regional economic integration through agricultural transformation, trade facilitation and private sector development.
The meeting, led by ECOWAS Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture, Dr. Kalilou Sylla, brought together ministers, senior government officials and development partners to strengthen policy coordination, enhance regional agricultural competitiveness and reinforce the institutional framework of the ECOWAS Common Market.
Sierra Leone’s Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Henry Musa Kpaka, highlighted the critical link between food security, economic sovereignty and regional stability. He stressed the need for coordinated regional action to cut structural dependence on imports and expand productive capacity across member states.
The engagement forms part of ECOWAS’ broader strategy to deepen economic integration, improve food and economic resilience, and promote structured private sector participation. It also seeks to ensure the effective domestication and implementation of regional policies in line with the bloc’s Vision 2050 agenda, which aspires to a peaceful, prosperous and fully integrated West Africa.
