The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission has taken a significant step toward promoting inclusive development across West Africa with the validation of a Regional Disability Data Accountability Framework.
The initiative is aimed at addressing persistent gaps in the availability of reliable and harmonised data on persons with disabilities, which have long hindered effective policy planning and implementation in the region.
Anchored on the ECOWAS Disability Action Plan (2020–2030) and aligned with broader continental and global commitments, the framework underscores the Commission’s transition toward evidence-based policymaking to ensure that vulnerable populations are not excluded from development processes.
The validation process, held in Abuja, brought together member states, regional institutions and development partners. It is expected to strengthen national data systems, enhance comparability across countries and support the design of more targeted and effective policies.
Officials say the framework will also improve resource allocation and promote inclusive service delivery, particularly in key sectors such as education, healthcare and social protection for persons with disabilities.
The move is projected to foster equitable growth, strengthen social cohesion and advance sustainable development across the West African sub-region.
