ECOWAS Marks 50th Anniversary with Beach Clean-Up, Tree Planting in Lomé

The Permanent Representation of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in Lomé on February 14, 2026, spearheaded a citizen-led beach clean-up and coconut tree planting exercise as part of activities commemorating the regional bloc’s 50th anniversary.
The initiative was organised in partnership with Ministry of Environment, Forest Resources, Coastal Protection and Climate Change of Togo and brought together more than 500 participants.
Those in attendance included political and administrative leaders, members of the diplomatic corps, civil society organisations focused on environmental protection, youth and women’s groups, as well as companies and stakeholders in the plastics industry.
The campaign was designed to advance a key ecological goal—stabilising sandy soils along the coastline and significantly reducing coastal erosion.
Organisers said the exercise reflects ECOWAS’ continued commitment to environmental sustainability and community engagement across the sub-region as it celebrates five decades of regional integration.
