ECOWAS, Saudi Arabia Pledge Deeper Cooperation on Security, Development

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and expanding strategic cooperation in key areas including peace, security, economic development and regional stability.

The commitment was made during a courtesy visit by Saudi Arabia’s newly appointed Ambassador to Nigeria, Yousef Mohammed Albalawi, to the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr Omar Alieu Touray, in Abuja on 2 April 2026.

During the meeting, both sides stressed the need for stronger collaboration in tackling regional challenges and promoting sustainable development across West Africa. They noted that long-term development can only be achieved in an environment of peace and security.

The discussions also focused on Saudi Arabia’s plans to expand its diplomatic presence within ECOWAS member states and increase support for regional development initiatives.

Touray and Albalawi further underscored the importance of coordinated efforts in addressing emerging threats such as misinformation and regional instability.

The meeting, according to both parties, reflects the enduring partnership between ECOWAS and Saudi Arabia, built on mutual trust, common interests and a shared commitment to deeper cooperation.
