FCT Corrections Command Facilitates Reintegration of Reformed Ex-Inmate, Appeals for Community Support

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), FCT Command, has reaffirmed its commitment to rehabilitation and reintegration as it formally handed over a reformed ex-inmate, Abdulkadir Mohammed, to the Aguma of Gwagwalada for community support and acceptance.

The Controller of Corrections, FCT Command, Christopher Peter Jen, who led the presentation, disclosed that Abdulkadir, an indigene of Gwagwalada, served a four-year and four-month custodial sentence during which he acquired vocational training in shoemaking.

As part of efforts to support his reintegration, he was equipped with a shoe-finishing machine to help him establish a sustainable source of income.

Highlighting his transformation, Abdulkadir showcased a pair of shoes he personally made and presented them to the traditional institution, demonstrating the impact of the Service’s rehabilitation programmes.

Jen called on traditional rulers, community leaders, and residents to support the reintegration process by providing enabling opportunities such as workspace and social acceptance.

He urged the public to shun stigma against ex-offenders, emphasizing that successful reintegration is key to reducing reoffending and promoting safer communities.

He reiterated that the initiative reflects the NCoS mandate of reformation, rehabilitation, and reintegration, noting that collaboration with communities remains essential to achieving lasting impact.

In his response, Bala Waziri, speaking on behalf of the Aguma of Gwagwalada, commended the Correctional Service for its reform-oriented interventions and assured that the community would support Abdulkadir’s successful reintegration.

He also applauded the leadership of the Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, MFR, mni, for advancing reforms that prioritize vocational empowerment and social reintegration.

The FCT Command noted that the initiative is part of its broader strategy to strengthen rehabilitation programmes, encourage skills acquisition, and foster partnerships that support ex-inmates in becoming productive members of society.
