FG, NPC Partner to Link Birth Registration with School Enrolment

The Federal Ministry of Education has entered into a strategic partnership with the National Population Commission (NPC) to integrate birth registration into Nigeria’s school enrolment and education planning framework.
The Minister of Education, Maruf Olatunji Alausa, announced the development in a statement issued on March 2, 2026, stressing that reliable population data is essential for effective education planning and equitable resource distribution.
According to him, accurate demographic information will support rational school location decisions, balanced teacher deployment, realistic enrolment forecasting, and fair allocation of resources across the country. He added that embedding birth registration in school admission processes would help ensure proper age placement of pupils and improve the integrity of academic records nationwide.
The Minister, however, clarified that full enforcement would only commence after expanded nationwide access to birth registration services, so as not to create unintended obstacles for families.
The Minister of State for Education noted that digital integration between both institutions would enhance transparency in enrolment procedures, improve monitoring of school attendance trends, and assist in the early detection of dropouts.
In his response, the Chairman of the NPC, Aminu Yusuf, reaffirmed the Commission’s mandate to oversee Nigeria’s Civil Registration and Vital Statistics system. He revealed that more than 4,000 registration centres are currently operational across the country, with ongoing digital improvements aimed at strengthening service delivery.
Both agencies agreed to set up a Joint Technical Working Group to harmonise verification processes and ensure seamless interoperability between their databases.
The Ministry described the collaboration as a major step toward evidence-based education reform and inclusive national development.
