The Federal Government has expressed concern over rising tensions and reported attacks on Nigerians in South Africa, calling for urgent action to protect its citizens.
Summoning South Africa’s Acting High Commissioner over protests in parts of that country calling for the expulsion of Nigerians and other foreign nationals.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that two Nigerians, Nnaemeka Ekpeyong and Kelvin Amaramiro, died following alleged assaults while in the custody of South African security agencies in April 2026.
Nigeria condemned the incidents and demanded thorough, transparent investigations, including access to autopsy reports and legal processes for the victims’ families.
Authorities also urged South Africa to take concrete steps against violence and ensure the safety and rights of Nigerians.
Meanwhile, Nigerians at home have been advised to remain calm as diplomatic engagements continue between both countries.
