FG Raises Alarm Over Illegal Use of Ambassadorial Titles

The Federal Government has cautioned against the rising misuse and fraudulent conferment of diplomatic titles, particularly the designation “Ambassador,” by unauthorised individuals and groups.
Addressing journalists in Abuja, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, described the practice as unlawful and deceptive, stressing that such titles are not recognised under Nigerian law or international diplomatic conventions.
He expressed concern over the activities of individuals and organisations conferring ambassadorial titles on themselves or unsuspecting members of the public. According to him, common violations include the unauthorised use of titles like “Ambassador” and “Diplomatic Envoy,” issuance of fake diplomatic documents, and the use of counterfeit identity cards, number plates, and passports bearing Nigeria’s insignia.
Ebienfa warned that anyone falsely presenting themselves as an ambassador without official appointment is guilty of impersonation, a criminal offence, and urged those involved to desist immediately.
He reiterated that only the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces has the constitutional authority to appoint and accredit ambassadors, noting that no individual, group, or organisation is permitted to confer such titles. He added that ambassadorial positions cannot be obtained through payment or affiliation with any organisation.
While acknowledging the use of “brand ambassador” roles in marketing, the Ministry clarified that such titles have no diplomatic or legal standing and do not grant the right to assume the title of Ambassador.
The spokesperson further revealed that the Ministry is working closely with security agencies, including the Nigerian Immigration Service and the Federal Road Safety Corps, to identify and prosecute offenders involved in the illegal use of diplomatic titles and materials.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the integrity of Nigeria’s diplomatic system, warning that it will not tolerate actions capable of undermining the country’s image.
