FMC Abuja Dismisses Claims of Negligence in Death of Ifunanya Nwangene

The Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abuja, has refuted claims circulating on social media alleging negligence and lack of anti-snake venom in the treatment of the late Ifunanya Lucy Nwangene, who died following a snake bite.
In a press statement issued on Sunday, the hospital confirmed that Ms. Nwangene was brought to the facility on January 31, 2026, after suffering a snake bite that resulted in severe neurotoxic complications. The management expressed condolences to her family, describing her death as a tragic loss.
According to the hospital, medical personnel responded promptly on her arrival, administering emergency care that included resuscitation, intravenous fluids, oxygen support, and polyvalent snake antivenom. The statement noted that after an urgent clinical assessment, her condition was found to be critical due to the neurotoxic effects of the venom.
FMC Abuja said arrangements were being made to transfer her to the Intensive Care Unit when her condition suddenly deteriorated. Despite intensive cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other life-saving interventions by the medical team, she could not be revived.
The hospital strongly denied allegations of inadequate response or unavailability of anti-snake venom, describing such claims as false and misleading. It reaffirmed its confidence in the professionalism and commitment of its staff and maintained that appropriate medical protocols were followed throughout the emergency.
FMC Abuja urged the public to rely on verified information from credible sources and avoid speculation on social media, adding that the hospital remains open to further inquiries.
The statement was signed by the Head of Clinical Services, Dr. Bioku Muftau, and dated February 1, 2026.
