The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (FMOH) has congratulated Mrs. Olufowobi-Yusuf Adeola, mni, Director of the Food and Drugs Services Department, on her conferment as Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Chemists of Nigeria (ICCON), describing the honour as well deserved.
The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, said chemistry remains central to environmental sustainability and public health, stressing that the discipline is foundational to modern healthcare systems.
Dr. Salako made this known at the fellowship investiture ceremony held at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja. Represented by the Director of Hospital Services, Dr. Gloria Adegoke, the Minister described the event as a celebration of excellence, integrity, and professional dedication, noting that ICCON has continued to promote ethical standards and capacity development in the chemistry profession.
According to him, as a regulatory and professional body, ICCON plays a critical role in strengthening standards across healthcare delivery, pharmaceutical safety, environmental protection, industrial development, and public health security.
The Minister further explained that chemistry underpins drug development, quality assurance, toxicology, laboratory diagnostics, and chemical safety regulation, making the role of professional chemists indispensable to national development.
He attributed Mrs. Olufowobi-Yusuf Adeola’s fellowship award to her exceptional competence, leadership, and contributions to the profession and the Ministry’s mandate. He noted that the Ministry thoroughly reviewed the Institute’s recommendations and found her credentials and service record outstanding.
“Her professional journey reflects dedication to excellence, commitment to public service, and unwavering adherence to ethical standards. Through her work, she has strengthened systems, built capacity, and contributed meaningfully to national development,” he said.
In her acceptance speech, Mrs. Olufowobi-Yusuf Adeola pledged to rededicate herself to excellence and service for the benefit of Nigeria and humanity. She described the fellowship as deeply meaningful, coming from a professional body committed to upholding standards and ethics in chemistry practice.
She expressed appreciation to the Council and leadership of ICCON, particularly the Registrar, as well as the Honourable Ministers, Permanent Secretary, and management of the Ministry for their support and enabling environment.
“My journey in public service has been shaped by mentorship, teamwork, and a shared commitment to strengthening our regulatory and public health systems,” she said, urging colleagues to uphold integrity, promote best practices, mentor younger professionals, and contribute to policy and system strengthening.
Earlier, the Registrar/CEO of ICCON, Chemist Jwalshik Wilford, described the ceremony as historic, noting that the fellowship is reserved for individuals who have made significant contributions to the advancement of chemistry in Nigeria. He expressed confidence that Mrs. Adeola would continue to champion policies that strengthen the health system and the practice of chemistry nationwide.
Born on February 9, 1969, Mrs. Olufowobi-Yusuf Adeola holds a B.Sc. (Education, Chemistry), an MBA, and an M.Ed. in Guidance and Counselling from Lagos State University. She joined the Federal Ministry of Health in 1993 as a Scientific Officer and rose through the ranks to her current position as Director of Food and Drugs Services.
