Former Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro is reportedly being held in a highly restricted detention unit in the United States following his arrest earlier this year.
According to reports, Maduro is detained in a small cell measuring approximately three by two metres, fitted with a metal bed and limited natural light. The facility is part of a special security section typically used for disciplinary isolation or inmates considered high-risk.
Sources indicate that the former president is being kept largely in isolation, with movement outside his cell restricted to about one hour, three times weekly, under escort and while handcuffed. Unconfirmed accounts also claim that loud shouts were heard from his cell, during which he allegedly declared: “I am the president. Tell them I have been kidnapped and mistreated.”
Maduro was captured on January 3, 2026, during a U.S. military-backed operation in Caracas and subsequently transferred to New York to face federal charges, including alleged drug trafficking and narco-terrorism offences.
He is currently being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn while awaiting further court proceedings in the United States.
