IGP Orders Dismissal, Prosecution of Officers Over Effurun Shooting

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has announced disciplinary measures against officers involved in the fatal shooting of a civilian in Effurun, Delta State.

Addressing journalists on April 29 at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, the IGP described the April 26 killing of Mene Ogidi as unlawful and a breach of police professional standards. He identified the principal officer involved as ASP Nuhu Usman, stating that the act amounted to an extra-judicial killing.

Disu disclosed that all officers connected to the incident were immediately redeployed from Delta State Command to Abuja to face internal disciplinary processes. While senior officers appeared before the Force Disciplinary Committee, junior officers were subjected to an Orderly Room Trial.

Findings from the investigation showed that the officers violated Force Order 247 and established operational procedures governing the use of firearms.

The disciplinary bodies recommended the dismissal of ASP Usman and other officers involved. The IGP added that, upon approval by the Police Service Commission, the affected officers would be handed over for prosecution on charges related to unlawful homicide.

He stressed that the actions of the officers do not reflect the values of the Nigeria Police Force, reiterating that the institution maintains zero tolerance for misconduct.

The IGP also extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured that justice would be pursued transparently, urging the public to remain calm and allow due process to take its course.
