INEC Urges Broadcasters to Put Electoral Integrity Above Profit Ahead of 2027 Polls

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission has called on broadcast organisations to place professionalism above financial gain as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.

Speaking at the 81st General Assembly of the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria in Abuja, the INEC chairman warned that the increasing commercialisation of political airtime could threaten the credibility of the elections.

He said media organisations would face growing pressure to favour wealthy political advertisers over balanced reporting, but urged broadcasters to resist the temptation and protect the integrity of the electoral process.

According to him, radio and television stations remain vital to democracy because they shape public opinion and influence the conduct of elections. He stressed that modern elections are fought not only at polling units, but also in the media space.

The INEC boss also cautioned that misinformation and fake news may pose a greater threat to the 2027 polls than physical violence. He warned that false information spread through social media and amplified by irresponsible broadcasters could undermine public confidence in the election.

To address this, he urged media organisations to establish real-time fact-checking systems and rely on verified information, particularly from official INEC communication channels.
He further called on broadcasters to encourage voter participation, warning that widespread voter apathy could weaken Nigeria’s democracy.
The chairman reminded media houses that with more than 21 registered political parties in the country, they have both a legal and ethical responsibility to provide fair and equal coverage to all contestants.
He also urged broadcasters to adopt clear editorial guidelines, disclose political advertising arrangements, and ensure transparency in pricing for campaign airtime.
The INEC chairman concluded by calling on broadcasters, regulators and other stakeholders to work together to prevent the airwaves from becoming tools of political manipulation and to guarantee credible elections in 2027.
