Inter-Governmental Action Group Against Money Laundering in West Africa Launches AML/CFT Data Framework for Liberia

The Inter-Governmental Action Group Against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA) has launched a three-day workshop in Liberia aimed at developing a national framework for collecting and managing Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) data.
The programme, which began on March 30 and will run until April 1, 2026, is being held in Monrovia and combines a training exercise with a technical workshop.
According to GIABA, the initiative is designed to strengthen Liberia’s compliance with international financial standards by creating a coordinated national system for the collection, storage and use of AML/CFT data across government institutions.
The workshop has drawn participants from key institutions in Liberia’s financial and regulatory sectors, including the Central Bank of Liberia, the Liberia Business Registry and the Financial Intelligence Agency of Liberia, as well as other government agencies and financial bodies.
Discussions during the event are focused on aligning Liberia’s data systems with international best practices. Participants are examining the standards of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), particularly Recommendation 33, which deals with statistics and data management in AML/CFT systems.
The workshop is also reviewing the requirements for establishing a centralised national database for AML/CFT purposes and assessing Liberia’s current data collection and statistical management processes.
Officials said the assessment would help identify existing strengths and challenges in the country’s current framework, with the goal of improving the effectiveness of Liberia’s efforts to combat money laundering and terrorist financing.
