The Islamic Republic of Iran has accused the United States and Israel of carrying out what it described as a deliberate military attack on its territory, warning that the action violates international law and the United Nations Charter.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Iran’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Gholamreza Mahdavi Raja, said the alleged strikes took place at a sensitive time when Iranians were preparing for the New Year and observing the holy month of Ramadan. He described the timing as a sign of disregard for humanitarian and ethical considerations.
The ambassador said the attacks contravene Article 2(4) of the UN Charter, which prohibits the use of force against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of any state, and described the action as a breach of international legal norms.
According to him, the strikes reportedly targeted civilian infrastructure, including schools, hospitals, humanitarian facilities and residential areas, raising concerns about violations of international humanitarian law meant to protect civilians during conflicts.
He cited an alleged attack on a girls’ school in the city of Minab, where Iranian authorities claim that 167 students were killed, describing the incident as one of the most disturbing aspects of the conflict and a possible war crime.
Raja also said several other civilians lost their lives in the attacks, noting that the deaths of children and other non-combatants represent a serious humanitarian concern that should attract international attention.
Iran further announced the death of its Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, calling it a significant loss for the country and accusing the attackers of disregarding international norms.
The ambassador added that the alleged strikes occurred while Iran was engaged in diplomatic discussions with the United States aimed at resolving disputes through dialogue, arguing that the military action undermines ongoing diplomatic efforts.
Citing Article 51 of the UN Charter, he said Iran reserves the right to defend itself against armed aggression, stressing that any response would be carried out within the framework of international law.
Raja called on member states of the United Nations to condemn the attacks, warning that inaction could embolden further violations and weaken the international rule-based order.
While emphasizing that Iran does not threaten neighboring countries and respects regional sovereignty, he warned that any foreign military facility used to launch attacks against Iranian territory could become a target in its defensive response.
He reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to international law, justice and regional stability, and urged the United Nations and the international community to respond to what he described as a clear act of aggression.
The ambassador concluded that Iran would continue to defend its rights while advocating for a peaceful international order based on respect for international law.
