Ibadan, Oyo State — Residents of Ibadan were left shocked after the skeletal remains of a man were discovered inside his home nearly four years after his death went unnoticed.
The remains were found on January 20, 2026, at a residence in the Idi Orogbo area of Adeosun, Life Forte community, along the Awotan–Apete axis of the city. The deceased was later identified as Aderemi Abiola, who is believed to have died around 2022.
According to community sources, the house had appeared abandoned for years, with thick vegetation overtaking the compound and obscuring the fence and driveway. Neighbours reportedly assumed the occupant had travelled or relocated, and no missing person report was filed during his prolonged absence.
Abiola was described as a quiet, private individual who lived alone and rarely interacted with others, a factor residents say contributed to his disappearance going unnoticed.
The discovery was made after community members, concerned about security risks posed by the abandoned property, decided to clear the overgrown compound. With police approval, they gained entry into the house, where a foul odour immediately raised suspicion.
Inside one of the rooms, police found fully skeletonized human remains lying on a bed. A mobile phone was reportedly still in the deceased’s hand, a detail that has deepened public concern about his final moments.
Police said there were no signs of forced entry, violence, or struggle. The house was locked from the inside, and investigators ruled out foul play. Abiola’s vehicle was also found within the compound, covered by vegetation, indicating it had not been used for years. A wallet containing his driver’s licence helped confirm his identity.
Authorities believe Abiola died of natural causes and that his body remained undiscovered for nearly four years.
The incident has reignited discussions about social isolation, loneliness, and the erosion of communal ties in urban communities.
