Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested six suspected drug traffickers and recovered a cache of illicit substances during a raid on a notorious drug enclave, Ama Hausa, on Bonny Island in Rivers State.
However, the operation turned tragic after an NDLEA officer, Chief Narcotic Agent Sadiq Bako Mujahid, died from severe head injuries sustained when suspected drug dealers mobilised armed hoodlums to attack the operatives.
The agency said the raid, carried out on February 6, 2026, targeted a well-known criminal hub. Despite the violent resistance, NDLEA operatives arrested all six suspects, including the alleged gang leader, Genesis George Benson, who was linked to the fatal attack.
Other suspects arrested during the operation were ThankGod Okon, Shamsudden Isah, Muhammed Musa, Adamu Muhammed, and Muhammed Yusuf.
According to the NDLEA, the confrontation occurred when Benson allegedly mobilised armed thugs to resist arrest. During the clash, Mujahid sustained critical head injuries and was rushed to the Bonny Island General Hospital, where he later died.
Reacting to the incident, NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), commended the operatives for their courage and resilience in the face of the attack.
He said the officers refused to be intimidated and ensured the suspects were apprehended and the drugs confiscated, despite the loss of their colleague.
Marwa described the deceased as a disciplined and courageous officer who paid the ultimate price in service to the nation, extending condolences to his family, colleagues, and the Rivers State Command.
He warned that attacks on NDLEA personnel would attract serious consequences, adding that the agency remained committed to its mission of eliminating illicit drug networks across the country.
The operation also led to the recovery of cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, skunk, and tramadol from the suspects.
