The Movement for Credible Elections (MCE) has strongly condemned President Bola Tinubu, the Senate, and the House of Representatives for altering the Electoral Act, accusing them of deliberately weakening mandatory real-time electronic transmission of election results. The group described the move as a direct threat to Nigeria’s democratic integrity and warned that those responsible must face the consequences.
In a statement signed by prominent civic leaders including Dr. Usman Bugaje, Prof. Pat Utomi, Dr. Olisa Agbakoba, Barr. Femi Falana, and Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, the MCE said the rollback undermines decades of reforms aimed at curbing collusion, result manipulation, and electoral violence.
The organization stressed that democracy decays when rules are bent for partisan interests, cautioning that any crisis of electoral legitimacy ahead of the 2027 elections would be the responsibility of lawmakers and political leaders, not citizens.
MCE pledged to continue mobilizing Nigerians to demand transparency and protect the integrity of the ballot, emphasizing: “Credible elections or nothing.”
