Nigeria and the Republic of Austria have reiterated their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, promoting multilateralism and advancing sustainable development following a high-level diplomatic meeting in Abuja.
The engagement, held on Thursday, January 22, 2026, brought together Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumiegwu-Ojukwu, and Austria’s Secretary-General at the Federal Ministry for International and European Affairs, Ambassador Nikolaus Marschik. Both sides reviewed the state of Nigeria–Austria relations, exchanged views on global and regional developments, and explored practical avenues for deeper cooperation amid shifting geopolitical and economic realities.
Ambassador Odumiegwu-Ojukwu welcomed the Austrian delegation and praised Austria’s decades-long cordial relationship with Nigeria, noting that bilateral ties have remained stable for over 50 years. She acknowledged Austria’s historic diplomatic presence in Nigeria and highlighted the role of cultural exchange and people-to-people relations in sustaining goodwill between both countries.
The Minister emphasised Nigeria’s interest in expanding economic cooperation, particularly in trade and investment. She identified renewable energy, green technologies, agriculture and agro-processing, infrastructure, digital innovation and ICT as priority sectors where Austrian expertise could support Nigeria’s development goals. She also encouraged Austrian businesses to explore opportunities within Nigeria’s Special Economic Zones and take advantage of the African Continental Free Trade Area to access wider regional markets.
Education, culture and academic exchange were also identified as key pillars of the partnership. Ambassador Odumiegwu-Ojukwu noted the growing interest of Nigerians in Austrian educational institutions and expressed readiness to deepen collaboration through scholarships, research partnerships and cultural exchange programmes.
Security and regional stability featured prominently in the discussions. The Nigerian side briefed Austria on ongoing efforts to combat terrorism, violent extremism and organised crime, particularly in the Sahel and West Africa. The Minister stressed that insecurity remains a global challenge requiring collective action, sustained international cooperation and shared responsibility.
Migration management was another area of focus, with Nigeria advocating for orderly and regular migration pathways that respect human rights while addressing the root causes of irregular migration. The Minister highlighted the importance of skills development, vocational training and youth empowerment as tools for transforming migration into an engine for development.
In his remarks, Ambassador Marschik commended Nigeria’s leadership role in Africa and described the country as one of Austria’s most important partners on the continent. He outlined Austria’s evolving Africa strategy, which aims to promote equal partnerships, economic cooperation, peace and security, education, cultural exchange and environmentally sustainable development. He noted that Nigerian perspectives would play a central role in shaping Austria’s future engagement with Africa.
Both delegations reaffirmed their commitment to multilateralism and a rules-based international order. Austria expressed appreciation for Nigeria’s support for its bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, while pledging reciprocal support for Nigeria’s future multilateral aspirations.
The meeting also explored opportunities for cooperation in diplomatic training, including Nigerian participation in programmes at Austria’s Diplomatic Academy, as well as broader people-to-people exchanges.
Concluding the engagement, Ambassador Odumiegwu-Ojukwu reaffirmed Nigeria’s readiness to deepen cooperation with Austria across identified priority areas, guided by mutual respect and shared values. The Austrian delegation, in turn, restated Austria’s commitment to engaging Nigeria as a strategic and forward-looking partner.
Both countries agreed that in a period of global uncertainty, strong bilateral relations anchored in multilateral cooperation remain vital to peace, stability and sustainable development, signalling a renewed and future-oriented Nigeria–Austria partnership.
