Nigeria, China Promote Health and Cultural Ties Through Tai Chi Celebration

Nigeria and China have highlighted their growing cultural and diplomatic partnership through the celebration of International Taijiquan Day, themed “China-Nigeria Good Partners.” The event, held in Abuja on the eve of the inaugural observance, brought together officials, practitioners, and enthusiasts to showcase the health and cultural benefits of Tai Chi.

Speaking at the occasion, Yang Jianxing, Cultural Counsellor at the Chinese Embassy and Director of the China Cultural Centre in Nigeria, described Tai Chi as a global cultural symbol with over 400 years of history. He noted that the martial art, recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2020, is now practiced by hundreds of millions worldwide and promotes harmony between humans and nature.

Yang also highlighted the international significance of March 21 as the first UN-recognized day named after a martial arts discipline, saying it reflects the global recognition of Tai Chi’s cultural and health value.

He linked the celebration to broader diplomatic milestones, noting that 2026 marks 55 years of Nigeria-China relations, and cited economic initiatives by Chinese President Xi Jinping, including tariff-free measures for African countries..
Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, said the event illustrated the intersection of sport, culture, and diplomacy, emphasizing the commission’s support for initiatives that deepen bilateral ties.

Olubunmi Olowokere, Permanent Secretary of the Social Development Secretariat of the Federal Capital Territory Administration, described Tai Chi as “a moving meditation” with significant health benefits. She encouraged Nigerians to adopt the practice in communities, schools, and recreation centers to promote physical, mental, and social well-being.

The celebration featured Tai Chi demonstrations and cultural exchange activities, reinforcing people-to-people engagement as a key driver of Nigeria-China relations.
