The Federal Government of Nigeria has congratulated Hungary’s newly inaugurated Prime Minister, Péter Magyar, following his swearing-in ceremony held at the Hungarian Parliament in Budapest on May 9, 2026.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, also congratulated the Tisza Party on its victory in the April 12, 2026 parliamentary elections, expressing Nigeria’s best wishes to the new administration as it begins its mandate.
Nigeria described the political transition in Hungary as a significant milestone in the country’s democratic development, noting that it reflects the importance of democratic participation, constitutional governance, and peaceful transfer of power in strengthening national institutions and public confidence.
The statement highlighted the cordial diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Hungary, which it said are built on mutual respect, cooperation, and shared commitment to international engagement. It noted that both nations have continued to strengthen bilateral ties in education, agriculture, trade and investment, science and technology, energy, and capacity development.
Nigeria also acknowledged Hungary’s scholarship and educational exchange programmes, describing them as valuable initiatives that have enhanced people-to-people relations between both countries.
The Federal Government further welcomed Prime Minister Magyar’s commitment to strengthening Hungary’s role within Europe and promoting democratic governance, regional stability, and economic growth.
According to the statement, Nigeria remains optimistic that bilateral relations with Hungary will continue to grow through sustained diplomatic engagement and mutually beneficial cooperation. It also reaffirmed its readiness to collaborate with the new Hungarian administration in advancing shared interests within multilateral institutions, including the United Nations.
Nigeria wished Prime Minister Magyar and the Hungarian government success in office while expressing hope for continued peace, stability, and prosperity for the Hungarian people.
