The Federal Government has congratulated the Government and people of Sierra Leone on the occasion of their Independence Day, marked annually on April 27.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, Nigeria noted that the anniversary commemorates Sierra Leone’s independence in 1961 and symbolises the country’s resilience, unity, and continued pursuit of peace, democracy, and national development.
Nigeria commended Sierra Leone’s contributions to regional stability and its commitment to democratic governance, peacebuilding, and sustainable development within the West African sub-region.
The statement also highlighted the longstanding bilateral ties between both countries, strengthened through their membership of the Economic Community of West African States and joint efforts to maintain peace and security in the region.
It recalled the role of the ECOWAS Monitoring Group during Sierra Leone’s civil war, noting Nigeria’s leadership in restoring peace and constitutional order.
According to the ministry, the relationship between both nations has evolved into a strategic partnership focused on trade, education, capacity building, and regional integration.
Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing cooperation within ECOWAS to promote peace, stability, and economic growth across West Africa.
The government also extended its best wishes to Sierra Leone for continued peace, progress, and prosperity.
