Nigeria Issues Advisory to Citizens in Iran, Gulf States Amid Rising Middle East Tensions

The Federal Government has issued a travel and safety advisory to Nigerians living in the Islamic Republic of Iran and neighbouring Gulf countries following escalating military tensions in the Middle East.

In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government said it is closely monitoring the volatile situation arising from reported military actions by Israel and the United States against targets in Iran, as well as retaliatory strikes by Iran in parts of the Gulf region.

The Ministry warned that the heightened tensions could lead to further escalation and urged Nigerians in affected areas to take precautionary measures to ensure their safety.

Citizens were advised to remain highly vigilant and aware of their surroundings, particularly avoiding strategic locations such as military and government installations that could become flashpoints. They were also encouraged to limit non-essential travel and movement until the security situation stabilizes, and to steer clear of large gatherings and public demonstrations.

The government further urged Nigerians to strictly adhere to security directives issued by local authorities, emphasizing that cooperation with law enforcement agencies is critical during periods of instability. Citizens were also encouraged to stay informed through credible international and local news platforms while avoiding misinformation.

The Nigerian Embassy in Tehran and diplomatic missions in affected Gulf states, including Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia, have been placed on high alert to provide consular assistance and facilitate communication with Nigerian nationals.

The Ministry assured the public that it will continue to assess developments and provide updates as necessary, reiterating that the safety and welfare of Nigerians abroad remain a top priority.

The Federal Government also called on all parties involved in the conflict to de-escalate tensions and return to dialogue in the interest of global peace and coexistence.

The statement was signed by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja.
