Nigeria has backed the creation of the World Data Organization, describing it as a major step towards building a secure and rules-based global data system.
The endorsement came from Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa while speaking to journalists at the organisation’s inaugural assembly held on March 30, 2026 at the China National Convention Center.
Ebienfa said the establishment of the organisation was a positive development, stressing that a structured and secure data system is essential for international cooperation. He added that Nigeria remains interested in improved data management, regulated access to information and collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
Nigeria’s participation in the new body reflects the country’s commitment to global cooperation on data governance and digital infrastructure.
Based in Beijing, the World Data Organization is a non-governmental and non-profit platform created to coordinate international data cooperation.
The organisation is expected to serve as an open platform for companies, research institutions and industry stakeholders, with a focus on narrowing the global data gap, unlocking the value of data and supporting digital economic growth.
The inaugural gathering attracted institutions and companies from several countries seeking stronger cooperation across the global data ecosystem.
The launch comes at a time when data is increasingly being recognised as a strategic resource driving industrial transformation and economic expansion.
