Nigeria, Kenya Reignite Bilateral Cooperation with Joint Commission Revival



Nigeria and Kenya have renewed efforts to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties, as Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, received Isaac Keen Parashina, the Kenyan High Commissioner to Nigeria, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja.
Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu welcomed the envoy and praised Kenya’s commitment to reviving the Nigeria–Kenya Joint Commission for Cooperation (JCC), dormant for over a decade. She described the Commission as a key mechanism for reviewing agreements, ensuring implementation of memoranda of understanding, and advancing structured bilateral cooperation.
In a statement issued by the Spokesperson, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, who which stated that the minister highlighted priority areas for collaboration, including trade facilitation, fintech, digital agriculture, livestock development, tourism, migration management, and anti-human trafficking initiatives. She emphasized that, as two of Africa’s largest economies, Nigeria and Kenya have a shared responsibility to promote intra-African trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Odumegwu-Ojukwu also stressed the importance of addressing youth-focused challenges, job creation, entrepreneurship, and innovation, while calling for stronger collaboration on irregular migration, human trafficking, and cybercrime prevention.
High Commissioner Parashina conveyed Kenya’s commitment to enhancing bilateral relations, operationalising visa reciprocity arrangements, and addressing outstanding trade and mobility issues through the Joint Commission. He also briefed the minister on Kenya’s hosting of the Africa–France Summit in Nairobi, encouraging Nigeria’s active participation and private sector involvement.
The meeting concluded with both sides expressing optimism that renewed diplomatic momentum would result in stronger economic ties, improved travel frameworks, and closer cooperation on regional security and migration management.
