Nigeria has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former Algerian President Liamine Zeroual, who died at the age of 84.
In a statement issued on Monday by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the Federal Government said it received the news of Zeroual’s passing with profound sadness.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, conveyed Nigeria’s condolences to Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf, the government and people of Algeria, and the late president’s family.
According to the statement, Nigeria joined Algeria in honouring Zeroual as a distinguished statesman, patriot and former military officer whose leadership came at a critical period in the country’s history.
The Federal Government noted that Zeroual played a significant role in steering Algeria through political stabilisation and democratic transition, describing his tenure as an important chapter in the country’s development.
Nigeria also said Zeroual’s legacy extended beyond Algeria, adding that his contributions to peace, statecraft and national unity across Africa would continue to be remembered.
The statement added that Nigeria stands in solidarity with the people and government of Algeria during the period of mourning and prayed for strength and comfort for the bereaved family and the nation.
