Nigeria Police Force on Tuesday staged a symbolic walkathon in Abuja to mark the 2026

National Police Day, with the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu leading officers from the Force Headquarters to the Unity Fountain.
The exercise, themed “Together We Walk, Together We Secure,” attracted police personnel, civil society organisations and members of the public, underscoring efforts to strengthen cooperation between the police and citizens in maintaining security.
Addressing participants, Olatunji Rilwan Disu said effective policing depends on strong collaboration with the public. He described the walkathon as an opportunity to improve trust, close the gap between officers and residents, and reaffirm the Force’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property.
The police chief also urged officers to prioritise physical fitness, noting that healthy personnel are better equipped to deliver efficient and effective service.
Participants said the large turnout of residents and police officers reflected improving relations between the Force and communities, particularly in the nation’s capital.
The Force said similar walkathons were being organised across commands and formations nationwide as part of activities lined up for National Police Day. According to the police, the events are intended to promote officers’ wellbeing while encouraging public support in crime prevention.
The 2026 National Police Day celebration will continue with other community-based programmes aimed at strengthening professionalism, accountability and community policing within the Force.
