The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the dismissal and arrest of four officers, including ASP Nuhu, over the fatal shooting of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State.
Addressing journalists at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, said the incident occurred on April 26, 2026, after the deceased received a parcel from a friend in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
According to the police, Ogidi had taken the parcel to a motor park to waybill it to Sapele when it was searched and found to contain a fabricated Beretta pistol and four rounds of 9mm ammunition.
Eyewitnesses reportedly apprehended him and handed him over to responding officers led by ASP Nuhu.
However, the police spokesperson disclosed that ASP Nuhu, in violation of standard operational procedures, shot and killed the unarmed suspect who was already in custody.
The remains of the deceased have been deposited in a mortuary, while a certified pathologist is expected to conduct an autopsy to aid prosecution.
Placid said a probe by the Police Monitoring Unit found the officers’ actions amounted to professional misconduct, abuse of office, and conduct likely to breach public peace, culminating in what he described as an unlawful killing.
He stressed that no suspicion of crime justifies extrajudicial action, noting that all suspects are entitled to due process under the law.
Following the investigation, ASP Nuhu and three members of his team were arrested, while internal disciplinary procedures recommended their dismissal.
The Police Service Commission has ratified the decision, making their removal from service effective immediately.
The case file has also been forwarded to the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation for prosecution, with the police pledging full cooperation to ensure justice is served.
Meanwhile, authorities said efforts are ongoing to apprehend the driver who delivered the parcel and two vigilante members linked to the incident, who are currently at large.
The police extended condolences to the family of the deceased and reassured the public of its commitment to accountability, transparency, and respect for human rights.
