The Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), DIG Hashimu Salihu Argungu (rtd), has emphasized the need for a thorough review of structural and operational issues within the Nigeria Police Force as the nation explores the establishment of state police.
DIG Argungu made the call during a working visit from the Committee for the Implementation of State Police, led by Professor Olu Ogunsakin. The delegation sought the expertise and institutional memory of the PSC to guide its mandate.
Professor Ogunsakin described the PSC Chairman as a “fountain of knowledge” and noted the committee’s aim to review the policing landscape, structure, and foundations to strengthen the force.
In response, DIG Argungu presented a step-by-step approach for effective state policing, urging the committee to diagnose underlying issues driving the demand for state police. He highlighted the importance of distinguishing between federal and state offences, addressing obsolete laws, and studying successful state police models abroad to adapt lessons for Nigeria.
PSC Board members, including Hon. Justice Paul Adamu Galumje (rtd), DIG (Dr.) Taiwo Lakanu (rtd), and Chief Onyemuche Nnamani, were present at the briefing. The committee’s task is to propose a framework covering recruitment, training, and resource allocation for state police structures.
