The U.S. state of South Carolina has confirmed at least 88 new measles infections within the past five days, raising the total number of reported cases to 646 amid a growing outbreak.
According to the South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH), the surge has affected the education sector, with no fewer than 15 schools—spanning elementary, middle and high levels—placing students under quarantine. Two universities in the state have also reported cases linked to the outbreak.
Health authorities further disclosed that potential measles exposures were identified at two supermarkets in the upstate area. Residents who may have come into contact with the virus, especially those without immunity, have been urged to watch closely for symptoms and seek medical advice if necessary.
