Tinubu Heads to Türkiye on Two-Day State Visit to Deepen Security, Trade Ties

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Sunday departed Abuja for a two-day official visit to the Republic of Türkiye, aimed at strengthening military cooperation and expanding bilateral trade and investment relations between both countries.
Officials say the visit reflects Nigeria’s broader effort to recalibrate its foreign partnerships toward countries with strong industrial capacity, security expertise and pragmatic diplomatic reach. Türkiye, which established diplomatic relations with Nigeria in 1962, is seen as a strategic partner combining geographic advantage, manufacturing depth and growing influence across Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
During the visit, discussions are expected to focus on defence collaboration, trade expansion, technology transfer and industrial development. Türkiye’s position as a transcontinental hub—linking Europe and Asia and controlling key maritime routes—has made Istanbul an increasingly important gateway for Nigerian exporters, investors and logistics operators seeking access to global markets.
Nigeria’s interest in Türkiye is driven by four main factors: its diversified industrial base spanning construction, defence manufacturing, energy and transport; its capacity to supply cost-effective, battle-tested security equipment; its trade model built around local production and joint ventures; and its geopolitical balance as a NATO member with strong ties across Africa, Asia and the Middle East.
High-level exchanges between both countries have intensified over the past decade. Former Turkish President Abdullah Gül visited Nigeria in 2010, followed by visits by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in 2016 and 2021. Nigeria’s former president, Muhammadu Buhari, also visited Ankara in 2017 during the D-8 Summit. These engagements laid the groundwork for the strategic talks expected during President Tinubu’s visit.
Bilateral trade between Nigeria and Türkiye now exceeds $1 billion annually, with peaks of about $2.7 billion in previous years. Both governments have set a target of $5 billion in trade volume. In 2024, Turkish exports to Nigeria were estimated at about $721 million, while Nigerian exports to Türkiye stood at roughly $505 million.
Several Turkish firms already operate in Nigeria across healthcare, manufacturing, agriculture and defence, including investments in hygiene products, food processing, agro-livestock projects and defence electronics.
Analysts say the visit aligns with President Tinubu’s ongoing economic reforms focused on fiscal discipline, exchange-rate adjustment, security sector reform and trade diversification. They note that Türkiye’s own modernization experience positions it as a partner for Nigeria’s ambition to become a regional manufacturing and logistics hub.
Officials describe the visit as a strategic engagement aimed at deepening cooperation and positioning Nigeria more firmly within global trade and security networks.
