The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has commended the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) for its critical role in strengthening Nigeria’s cybersecurity framework.
This commendation is contained in UNODC’s 2025 Annual Report on Cybercrime in Nigeria, which highlights the Centre as a key functional unit in the fight against cyber-enabled crimes. According to the report, the NPF-NCCC recorded notable achievements, including the recent arrest of 93 Chinese nationals and other Asian suspects linked to large-scale cybercrime operations, a development that significantly boosted the Centre’s operational profile in cyberspace.
UNODC noted that the Centre achieved remarkable success across several operational phases, particularly in asset recovery and restitution. In 2024 alone, the Unit recovered ₦8.82 billion, 115,237.91 USDT in cryptocurrency, and $84,000, all of which were returned to victims. The report also disclosed that 685 devices used for cybercrime activities were dismantled during the period under review.
The commendation follows another major recognition in which the NPF-NCCC was named the Best Cybercrime Unit in Africa by INTERPOL’s Cybercrime Directorate in Singapore, emerging top among units from 54 African countries. The Centre was also praised for upgrading its public complaint system to an e-reporting platform, enhancing ease of access for citizens to report cyber-related offences.
While presenting copies of the report to the Director of the NPF-NCCC, UNODC reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Centre through funding, capacity-building, and the provision of advanced technological tools to improve operational efficiency.
In his response, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, commended UNODC for its sustained partnership and reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to ensuring a safer and more secure cyberspace.
