Human rights organisation, Global Rights, has called for an immediate and independent investigation into the reported deaths of more than 37 detainees, including minors, in Niger State.
The group said the victims were allegedly arrested at mining sites around the M.I. Wushishi/Lukoto axis of Minna over suspected illegal mining activities.
Global Rights urged authorities to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths, identify those responsible and ensure accountability if wrongdoing is established.
It also called for independent civilian oversight of the investigation, transparent disclosure of findings and access to relevant detention records.
The organisation further demanded protection for the families of the deceased and other detainees against intimidation, harassment or retaliation.
It said affected families should receive timely information, legal assistance and safe channels to report concerns and participate in the proceedings.
Global Rights stressed that children must not be subjected to unlawful or inhumane detention, urging authorities to provide justice, support and effective remedies to affected families.
