The FCT Police Command has confirmed the collapse of a building on Abidjan Street, Wuse Zone 3, Abuja, with search and rescue operations ongoing to determine whether anyone is trapped under the rubble.

The incident occurred on Monday, September 7, 2026, with the police receiving a distress call at about 7:45 p.m.

Following the report, a police response team led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Department of Operations, ACP Edward Akaniyene, and the Area Commander, Metro, ACP Georgelyn Ufomadu, was deployed to the scene.

The operation is being carried out in collaboration with personnel from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), Federal Fire Service (FFS), the Security Services Department, Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), and other emergency response agencies.

According to preliminary findings by the police, the building had previously been marked and sealed by the Department of Development Control, Abuja.

The Command said no victim had been confirmed as of the time of its statement, stressing that rescue teams were still searching the debris for possible survivors.

Police authorities said investigations had also commenced to establish the circumstances surrounding the collapse and determine its possible cause.

The FCT Police Command urged residents to remain calm, avoid the affected area and cooperate with emergency responders to ensure the rescue operation is conducted safely and effectively.
