The African Telecommunications Union (ATU) Conference of Plenipotentiaries has concluded in Abuja with Zambia’s Engr. Kezias Kazuba Mwale elected as the Union’s Secretary-General for the 2027–2030 term.
Mwale emerged victorious after polling 21 of the 34 votes cast, defeating four other contenders to succeed the outgoing Secretary-General, John Omo, whose four-year tenure has come to an end.
The conference brought together delegates from across Africa, alongside key industry stakeholders, to deliberate on the continent’s digital future, with discussions focusing on artificial intelligence, digital innovation, cybersecurity, connectivity and regional collaboration.
In his acceptance speech, Mwale pledged to advance digital inclusion, expand affordable broadband access, strengthen cybersecurity and promote digital skills development across Africa.
He also called for stronger partnerships among governments, regulators, the private sector and development partners to ensure that every country, community and citizen benefits from Africa’s digital transformation.
The conference ended with the adoption of key resolutions aimed at accelerating the use of artificial intelligence, expanding connectivity, promoting innovation and deepening regional cooperation to drive Africa’s digital development.
