The Defence Headquarters has announced the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who died while in captivity after being abducted by unidentified criminals.
In a statement issued on Friday by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the Armed Forces of Nigeria expressed deep sorrow over the former military spokesperson’s death and extended condolences to his family, colleagues and Nigerians.
The Defence Headquarters described the late senior officer as a distinguished military professional who served in several strategic roles, including spokesperson for military formations and Director of Defence Information.
According to the statement, Major General Abubakar made significant contributions to counter-insurgency operations, the professional growth of the Armed Forces and national unity.
The military explained that public comments on his abduction were initially withheld to allow ongoing rescue efforts by the Armed Forces and other security agencies aimed at securing his release.
The statement noted that the tragic development has further strengthened the resolve of the Armed Forces to intensify operations against terrorism, kidnapping and other criminal activities across the country.
Defence Headquarters assured Nigerians that security operations have been reinforced to track down those responsible for the abduction and dismantle terrorist networks threatening national peace and security.
The Armed Forces reaffirmed their commitment to protecting Nigeria’s sovereignty and ensuring that perpetrators of terrorist acts are brought to justice.
