The Ebonyi State Police Command has dismissed as false and unfounded allegations that six families were asked to pay ₦700,000 each for the release of their sons who were allegedly arrested on the orders of a traditional ruler.
The Command, in a statement issued by its Police Public Relations Officer, SP Joshua Ukandu, on Tuesday, said the allegation was contained in a social media post by one Mr. Justice Ozobi.
According to the police, the allegation was aimed at tarnishing the image and reputation of the Commissioner of Police and the Command.
The Command also faulted the social media publication for containing what it described as typographical errors, incoherent claims and inaccurate information.
It further noted that the photograph used in the publication was that of a former Commissioner of Police who had long retired from the Ebonyi State Command.
The police clarified that the Command does not handle land disputes, stressing that any attempt to link the Commissioner of Police or the Command to the alleged collection of money over a land-related matter was baseless.
The Command said the allegation was malicious and capable of distracting it from its responsibilities of protecting lives and property, preventing crime and maintaining peace and security across the state.
It reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, discipline, accountability and transparency, adding that credible allegations of misconduct against police officers would be investigated appropriately.
The Command challenged Ozobi to provide the evidence upon which he based his allegations, rather than circulating what it described as unsubstantiated and defamatory claims on social media.
The police also urged members of the public to exercise restraint and responsibility when sharing information online, particularly information capable of misleading the public or damaging the reputation of individuals and institutions.
The Command warned that deliberate circulation of false or defamatory information would not be tolerated, adding that it would take appropriate legal action against offenders in accordance with the law.
