The Federal Government has approved five evacuation flights to repatriate Nigerians stranded in South Africa after more than 500 citizens were successfully screened and cleared for return.
The disclosure was made on Sunday by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, who said the evacuation exercise is being coordinated through Nigeria’s Mission in Pretoria.
According to the ministry, the screening process for Nigerians willing to return home has been extended until Wednesday, June 10, 2026, to allow additional applicants to register.
Ebienfa explained that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the five evacuation flights, which will be operated by Air Peace. He added that the first batch of evacuees is expected to leave Johannesburg on Monday evening, pending the issuance of required flight permits and operational approvals.
The first flight is projected to convey about 270 passengers to Lagos.
The ministry also noted that details of the departure schedule and estimated arrival time in Lagos would be communicated after further updates from the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa.
The planned evacuation has brought relief to many affected Nigerians, as government authorities intensify efforts to ensure the safe return of citizens from South Africa.
