The Nigerian Correctional Service Federal Capital Territory Command has partnered with the Luchi Advocate Foundation to provide vocational equipment and welfare materials to inmates at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kuje, as part of efforts to strengthen rehabilitation and reintegration programmes.
The donation exercise, which took place at the custodial facility, was attended by senior officers of the Command, management staff of the centre, and members of the Foundation led by its Founder and Chairman, Oluchi Vivian Uche.
The intervention is aimed at supporting inmates undergoing vocational training in tailoring, soap making, and other skills acquisition programmes within the facility.
Officials said the donated materials would improve training capacity, enhance productivity, and better prepare inmates for self-reliance after serving their terms.
Speaking during the presentation, Uche said her involvement in the criminal justice sector had exposed the need for stronger support systems for inmates seeking a fresh start after incarceration.
According to her, many inmates are willing to rebuild their lives but often lack access to practical tools and opportunities needed for successful reintegration into society.
She noted that sustainable rehabilitation requires deliberate investment in vocational training, mentorship, and economic empowerment.
Receiving the items on behalf of the Service, the Controller of Corrections, FCT Command, Christopher Peter Jen, described the donation as timely and in line with the Service’s mandate of reformation, rehabilitation, and reintegration.
He urged beneficiaries to take advantage of the opportunity by committing themselves to learning productive skills that would positively impact their lives upon release.
Controller Jen also reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to partnerships with non-governmental organisations and other stakeholders focused on inmate welfare and rehabilitation.
Items donated by the Foundation included sewing machines, materials for liquid soap, Izal and air freshener production, jeans materials for tailoring practice, packaging containers, tissue paper, bottled water, and packs of cooked food.
The Foundation also presented branded souvenirs and official polo shirts to the Controller in appreciation of his support as the Foundation’s Grand Patron.
The initiative highlights the growing collaboration between correctional institutions and civil society groups in promoting inmate rehabilitation and reducing recidivism in Nigeria.
