The Network Against Corruption and Trafficking (NACAT) has condemned the continued detention of pupils, students and teachers abducted from schools in Oyo State more than two weeks ago, describing the situation as a reflection of worsening insecurity and a failure of public safety measures.
In a statement issued by its Operations Manager, Stanley Ugagbe, the organisation expressed concern over reports that one of the abducted teachers was allegedly killed in captivity, while other victims, including schoolchildren, continue to face harsh and inhumane conditions.
NACAT said the circulation of videos showing the victims undergoing torture and hardship underscores the urgent need for decisive action by security agencies, noting that schools have increasingly become targets of criminal attacks.
The group described the persistent wave of kidnappings and killings across the country as evidence of serious security challenges, stressing that educational institutions should remain safe spaces for learning.
It further criticized what it called the government’s inability to adequately protect lives and property, arguing that prolonged captivity of victims and delayed rescue efforts have exposed weaknesses in the nation’s security architecture.
NACAT declared its support for the ongoing strike action by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Oyo State, describing the industrial action as a necessary response to the security threats facing teachers and students.
According to the organisation, educators now operate under constant fear of attacks and abductions, making the suspension of academic activities a reflection of the gravity of the crisis confronting the education sector.
While acknowledging the Federal Government’s plan to recruit forest guards, NACAT urged authorities to ensure that the initiative translates into concrete security improvements rather than remaining a policy announcement.
The group called for intensified intelligence-driven rescue operations to secure the immediate and unconditional release of all abducted pupils and teachers, urging security agencies to work in a coordinated and professional manner.
It also appealed to government at all levels to strengthen security strategies, improve community intelligence gathering, and safeguard schools and rural communities from criminal activities.
NACAT further demanded accountability in the management of security funds, insisting that resources allocated for security must produce tangible results in protecting citizens.
The organisation extended its sympathy to the families of the victims and affected communities, while urging authorities to provide medical and psychological support to survivors once rescued.
It emphasized that insecurity and attacks on innocent citizens must not be allowed to become a normal part of national life.
