Nigeria has called on African countries to strengthen collaboration and present a united front in shaping global digital policies as the African Telecommunications Union (ATU) convened a preparatory meeting ahead of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Plenipotentiary Conference in Abuja.
Addressing delegates at the opening of the meeting, the Federal Government said Africa’s digital future depends on collective action to expand broadband connectivity, strengthen cybersecurity, promote responsible artificial intelligence, harmonise regulatory standards and improve spectrum management across the continent.
The government described digital technology as a key driver of economic growth, noting that investments in broadband infrastructure, cloud computing, satellite communications and secure digital networks are now indispensable to national development and competitiveness.
It emphasized that institutions such as the African Telecommunications Union play a critical role in enabling African countries to coordinate policies, build consensus and advocate for the continent’s interests in global telecommunications and digital governance.
Nigeria reaffirmed its support for the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the Digital Transformation Strategy for Africa, saying the frameworks are essential for creating jobs, improving education and healthcare, deepening financial inclusion and accelerating sustainable economic development.
The government highlighted ongoing investments in broadband expansion, digital public infrastructure, artificial intelligence, innovation and cybersecurity, stressing that Nigeria remains committed to working with other African countries to build a resilient and globally competitive digital economy.
It also urged greater African participation in international technology decision-making, arguing that the continent must move beyond being represented at global forums to actively influencing policies that will shape the future of digital technologies.
The meeting is expected to harmonise Africa’s common positions ahead of the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference while mobilising support for African candidates contesting leadership positions within the ITU Council.
Nigeria further expressed confidence that the forthcoming ATU leadership elections would be conducted in a transparent and credible manner, reflecting the principles of unity, cooperation and mutual respect among member states.
The government noted that Africa’s rapidly growing digital market, youthful population and expanding innovation ecosystem offer immense opportunities for economic transformation, provided countries continue to invest in digital infrastructure and strengthen regional partnerships.
It urged participants to use the meeting to reinforce Africa’s collective vision for a connected, innovative, secure and prosperous continent, adding that the decisions taken would help shape the future of digital development across Africa.
