Nigeria Summons South African Envoy Over Anti-Foreigner Protests

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nigeria has summoned the Acting High Commissioner of South Africa for a meeting in Abuja on Monday, May 4, 2026, over recent protests targeting foreigners.

In a statement issued Saturday, the ministry said the meeting is aimed at formally expressing the Nigerian government’s deep concern over developments that could strain the long-standing relations between both countries.
According to the statement, discussions will centre on ongoing demonstrations in South Africa, as well as reported cases of harassment of Nigerian nationals and attacks on their businesses.

The ministry acknowledged rising concerns among Nigerians regarding the situation but urged citizens to remain calm, assuring that the Federal Government remains committed to safeguarding the rights and welfare of Nigerians living in South Africa.

The statement was signed by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa.
