The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) have launched a strategic partnership to integrate the National Identification Number (NIN) database with Nigeria’s National Postcode System as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s digital public infrastructure.
The collaboration was unveiled at a joint event in Abuja on Thursday, where both agencies described the initiative as a major milestone in advancing digital governance and improving access to public services.
Speaking at the event, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NIMC, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, said the partnership extends beyond a formal agreement, noting that it would create an integrated system that combines trusted identity with verified location information.
According to her, while the NIN establishes an individual’s identity, the national postcode system provides reliable location data, a combination she said is essential for an efficient digital ecosystem.
Coker-Odusote disclosed that following the enactment of the NIMC Act 2026, the commission now serves as the custodian of Nigeria’s Digital Public Infrastructure for identity and the Root Certification Authority for the National Public Key Infrastructure.
She revealed that technical teams from both agencies have commenced work to integrate postcode retrieval into the NINAuth platform, enabling Nigerians to verify their addresses and obtain their postcodes through a single trusted platform.
The NIMC boss said the integration would simplify access to services, improve government planning, enhance beneficiary targeting, and support policy implementation across sectors including healthcare, education, finance, logistics and emergency response.
She added that the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda by promoting digital innovation, economic inclusion and more efficient public service delivery.
Also speaking, the Postmaster General and Chief Executive Officer of NIPOST, Tola Odeyemi, said the partnership supports the agency’s ongoing transformation into a modern national infrastructure institution.
He described identity and postcode systems as two critical components of a modern economy, noting that while identity enables access to services, postcode provides the direction needed for efficient service delivery.
Odeyemi said NIPOST’s nationwide network and statutory responsibility for addressing position the agency to drive the adoption of a modern national addressing framework.
He stressed that the collaboration is aimed at ensuring every Nigerian can be identified, located, reached and effectively served, rather than deploying technology for its own sake.
Both agency heads assured that the partnership would be implemented with strict adherence to privacy, security, data governance and institutional accountability standards.
The collaboration is expected to accelerate Nigeria’s digital transformation by enabling seamless interoperability between the country’s identity and addressing systems.
