NLC Backs Teachers’ Strike Over Rising Abductions

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has declared support for the ongoing strike action by the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, following increasing cases of abduction involving teachers and students across the country.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, NLC President, Joe Ajaero, described the nationwide action by teachers as a strong response to worsening insecurity in schools and communities.
The labour movement said the strike reflects the determination of teachers to protect themselves rather than continue to face attacks from bandits and criminal groups. The Congress also noted that the action serves as a clear warning to government authorities to address the growing security challenges facing citizens.
The NLC commended the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, led by Titus Audu Amba, for what it described as a thoughtful and coordinated decision.
The Congress expressed concern over the increasing attacks on vulnerable workers, including local government employees, doctors, nurses and other health workers, many of whom have become victims of kidnappers and bandits.
The labour body also lamented the recent abduction incidents in Oyo State, describing images of abducted children allegedly held by bandits as heartbreaking.
According to the NLC, insecurity has continued to spread across several parts of the country, from Zamfara to Oyo, Maiduguri and Port Harcourt, stressing that the nation can no longer remain passive while violent attacks persist.
The Congress warned that it may embark on solidarity actions with teachers and other workers if governments at all levels fail to take decisive measures to improve security and secure the release of abducted victims.
