The Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has condemned the alleged assault on a journalist with Albarka Radio, describing the incident as unacceptable and contrary to the mandate of the Nigeria Police Force.
The CP made this known on Monday during a meeting with officials of the Nigeria Union of Journalists Correspondents’ Chapel, the management of the radio station, and family members of the affected reporter at the command headquarters.
Aliyu expressed displeasure over the incident, stressing that police officers are deployed to safeguard lives and property, not to engage in acts of violence against civilians.
He described the attack as an affront to journalists, noting the long-standing relationship between the police and the media, and assured that a thorough investigation would be conducted.
According to him, any officer found culpable will face appropriate disciplinary action in line with the law. He also emphasized the need for restraint among officers, even in the face of provocation.
The commissioner disclosed that an investigative and disciplinary panel has been set up to look into the matter, with a pledge that justice will be served.
