Police Launch Online Campaign to Tackle Cybercrime

The Nigeria Police Force has launched a nationwide online awareness campaign aimed at combating cybercrime and promoting safer digital practices among Nigerians.
The month-long initiative, organised through the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC), focuses on online safety and cyber hygiene, encouraging citizens to adopt responsible behaviour while using digital platforms.
The campaign, themed “Real Odogwu no dey hide face,” is designed to educate the public on the growing threats posed by cybercriminals and the need for increased vigilance in the digital space.
Speaking at the launch in Abuja, the Director of the NPF-NCCC, Commissioner of Police Ifeanyi Uche Henry, said cyber threats continue to evolve and transcend national boundaries. He explained that the campaign is a response to the increasing cases of identity theft, romance scams, business email compromise, sextortion and phishing attacks targeting Nigerians.
According to him, many cyber incidents occur due to a lack of public awareness, stressing the need for individuals to adopt safer online practices to protect their digital identities.
The Director also warned individuals involved in cybercrime to desist, noting that the Centre’s Cyberhawk teams are deploying advanced digital tracking tools to detect and prosecute offenders in line with the law.
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, commended the support of the UK National Crime Agency and the City of London Police, describing the partnership as crucial in strengthening international cooperation against cybercrime and enhancing digital security.
The Police urged Nigerians to remain vigilant online by verifying information, protecting their devices and safeguarding sensitive financial details such as ATM PINs, one-time passwords and Bank Verification Numbers. Citizens were also advised to use strong passwords, enable multi-factor authentication, avoid suspicious links and ensure that sensitive personal or corporate information is shared only through secure communication channels.
