The Nigeria Police Force has commenced the payment of N2.317 billion in insurance benefits to 2,971 beneficiaries and next-of-kin of deceased police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, disclosed this on Thursday, September 3, 2026, during the presentation of cheques to beneficiaries under the Group Life Assurance, Group Personal Accident and IGP Family Welfare Schemes.
Disu said the payments covered the 2017/2018, 2018/2019, 2020/2021, 2021/2022, 2022/2023 and 2024/2025 insurance policy years, describing the exercise as a demonstration of the Force’s commitment to the welfare of its personnel and their families.
The IGP said some of the payments represented outstanding claims recovered from insurance companies after years of delays, while others were made by insurers that had fulfilled their obligations.
He stressed that the benefits were legitimate entitlements arising from the service and sacrifice of the deceased officers, assuring their families that the Police Force would not abandon them.
Disu commiserated with families who lost their loved ones in the line of duty, noting that no amount of money could replace a deceased family member. He, however, urged beneficiaries to use the funds wisely, particularly for education, welfare and the future of children and other dependants left behind.
The IGP also paid tribute to police officers recently killed in the line of duty, including personnel attacked in Buni-Yadi, Yobe State, members of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit killed during a rescue operation in Zamfara State, and 10 officers ambushed and killed during an operation in Kebbi State.
According to him, the sacrifices of the fallen officers underscore the risks associated with policing and the responsibility of the Force to protect the welfare of serving personnel and their families.
The IGP said personnel welfare remained a major priority of his administration, adding that efforts would continue to improve working conditions, healthcare, accommodation and other legitimate benefits due to police officers and their families.
He also directed the Force Insurance Unit to intensify sensitisation among police personnel to ensure officers and their families understand their insurance rights and the procedures for accessing benefits.
Disu disclosed that, within two months, the unit had visited six commands and more than 50 divisions and formations in the Federal Capital Territory to raise awareness about insurance benefits and claims procedures.
The IGP commended the Force’s insurance partners for their cooperation, while urging insurance companies to settle legitimate claims promptly, stressing that such payments could serve as a critical lifeline for families who had lost their breadwinners.
He assured families of fallen officers that the Nigeria Police Force remained committed to supporting them and ensuring that the sacrifices of their loved ones were recognised and remembered.
